NEU – Getting Started in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Workshop

CONTENT
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) can be defined as „the systematic study of teaching and learning, using established or validated criteria of scholarship, to understand how teaching (beliefs, behaviours, attitudes, and values) can maximize learning, and/or develop a more accurate understanding of learning, resulting in products that are publicly shared for critique and use by an appropriate community“ (Potter and Kustra, 2011).

This one-day workshop will support participants in exploring the potential for using and conducting SoTL in their own teaching contexts. After a brief introduction to the scholarship of teaching and learning, participants will engage in a series of small and large group discussions to they identify something in their teaching practice that they are curious about and explore different research designs and approaches that fit their research question. The session will include:

  • An introduction to SoTL including purpose, questions, methods, and types of data analysis
  • A review of example studies which illustrate SoTL questions and methods from a range of disciplines and perspectives on learning
  • Time for participants to connect the presentation ideas to their own interests, through facilitated small and large group discussion

YOU AS PARTICIPANTS

  • articulate one or more questions about student learning that you are interested in.
  • compare and contrast various methods for assessing and studying student learning.
  • identify key words that will assist you in literature review about your specific areas of interest.
  • choose dissemination venues appropriate to your goals.
