How can I adapt my teaching to work more successfully with international students?

CONTENT

Are you in an institution that is growing in terms of the diversity in cultures of its students and staff? How can these changes benefit your personal and professional growth and your interactions with students? And how can you develop the intercultural competencies that can help you to get along with, learn from and work more successfully with people from diverse cultures?

This two-day workshop will focus on practical answers to these questions.

Day 1: Exploring ‘culture’ and developing your Intercultural competencies

  • Internationalisation of Higher Education.
  • The challenges of a culturally diverse classroom.
  • Cultural Self-Awareness - reflecting on our own culture and our cultural assumptions.
  • Reflecting on our own educational cultures and our self-concept as educators.
  • Critical incidents from classroom experience.

Day 2: Applying intercultural competencies to your educational context

  • Understanding the experience of international students.
  • Developing inclusive teaching practices for all.
  • Helping students understand expectations in your institution, e.g. how to work and learn independently and collaboratively, how to develop critical thinking skills and how to work more effectively in multi-cultural groups.
  • Developing intercultural learning in your students so they work more effectively with each other and become prepared for the global workplace.
